A riff on the Manhattan from Portland, OR bartender Mike Robertson of The Driftwood Room, the Civil War blends some pretty inventive ingredients to great effect. Artichoke-flavored Cynar and a local bourbon called Burnside (you can use your favorite stuff in its place if it's not available) make for an excellent variation on the classic.

Ingredients

1.5 oz Burnside bourbon
0.5 oz Cocchi sweet vermouth di Torino
0.5 oz Cynar
2 dashes Fee Brothers old fashioned bitters
1 Amarena cherry, for garnish

Preparation: How to make a Civil War

  1. Combine all ingredients (except cherry) in a mixing glass with ice.
  2. Stir until chilled.
  3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  4. Garnish with cherry and serve.
