A variation on the Old-Fashioned featuring genever, the predecessor of modern gin originating in the Netherlands and Belgium.
2 oz Bols barrel-aged genever
2 dashes orange bitters
1 sugar cube
Preparation: How to make a Genever Old-Fashioned
- Add sugar cube, two dashes of orange bitters, and a few drops of water to the bottom of an Old-Fashioned glass, then muddle until sugar is dissolved.
- Add 2 oz of Bols barrel-aged genever.
- Add one large ice cube. The best ones barely fit inside the glass.
- Stir until chilled.
- Finally, cut a slice of peel from a fresh, firm orange using a vegetable peeler or paring knife. Aiming the cut side over the surface of the drink, twist it to squeeze out a mist of essential oils, then drop it in the glass.
