Grasshopper Recipe

The Grasshopper cocktail is what’s known as a “trio,” a drink with two alcoholic ingredients (in this case, creme de menthe and creme de cacao) and a third non-alcoholic ingredient (in this case, cream). It’s low in alcohol content, so you can make your way through a couple before you start to feel it, and it’s almost always best enjoyed as a dessert drink. It was invented in New Orleans’ French Quarter in the mid-20th century, and gained popularity in the decades that followed.

1 oz green creme de menthe
1 oz white creme de cacao
2 oz heavy cream
Fresh-ground nutmeg for garnish

Preparation: How to make a Grasshopper

  1. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well until chilled.
  2. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  3. Grate a bit of nutmeg over the surface of the drink for garnish and serve.
