There are few cocktails that taste better on a chilly fall or winter evening than Hot Buttered Rum. Featuring a delicious, spiced buttery batter, dark rum, and hot water or apple cider (we prefer the cider, because why skimp out?), variations on this Hot Buttered Rum recipe date all the way back to the colonial Americas. If it was enough to keep the pilgrims warm through the winter, we think it’ll probably do the trick for you, too.
|2 oz dark rum|
|Half stick softened butter|
|1 cup light brown sugar|
|0.5 tsp ground cinnamon|
|0.25 tsp grated nutmeg|
|Pinch ground cloves|
|Boiling water or apple cider|
Preparation: How to make a Hot Buttered Rum
- First, you'll need to make the batter: combine butter, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves in a bowl and mix together thoroughly. Place in the refrigerator until it's mostly firm. (This makes enough for about 6 servings.)
- Spoon 2-3 oz of batter into each mug.
- Add dark rum.
- Fill the mug with boiling water or hot apple cider.
- Stir and serve.
