The Tobacco Road is simple, strong, and features an unmistakable combination of Cynar and mezcal. The finishing touches of a grapefruit rind and a pinch of salt really enhance the experience (I’ve chosen to garnish mine with some Kilauea Onyx Black Hawaiian Sea Salt I got from online specialty shop The Meadow). The result is a dynamic garnish that begins to eat away at the cocktail’s one large ice cube, slowly infusing the spirits with flavor.

Ingredients

1.5 oz mezcal
1.25 oz Cynar
0.5 oz Fino sherry
2 dashes Peychaud's bitters
Grapefruit twist
Pinch of sea salt

Preparation: How to make a Tobacco Road

  1. Add ingredients to a mixing glass with ice and stir.
  2. Strain into an Old-Fashioned glass over one large ice cube, then sprinkle salt over the ice.
  3. Garnish with a grapefruit twist.
