The Zombie is a tropical drink that was reportedly concocted by legendary tiki proprietor Don the Beachcomber in the late 1930s as a hangover cure. In reality, it's probably created a lot more hangovers than it's cured, considering most recipes include a full four ounces of rum (one of which is 151 proof).
The classic Donn Beach Zombie recipe uses something known as "Donn's Mix," which is basically just a blend of cinnamon simple syrup and grapefruit juice. To make it, heat 0.5 cup water, 0.5 cup sugar, and two crushed cinnamon sticks in a small saucepan. Once it has cooled completely, combine the syrup with 2 cups fresh grapefruit juice.
The Zombie is a cocktail that should probably come with a warning label: we rarely recommend having more than one, and three is getting into alcohol poisoning territory. So, all joking aside, take it easy on this one.
|1.5 oz dark rum|
|1.5 oz gold rum|
|1 oz 151 rum|
|0.5 oz falernum|
|0.5 oz Donn’s mix (see recipe description)|
|1 barspoon grenadine|
|Dash Herbsaint or Pernod|
|Dash Angostura bitters|
|Mint sprig for garnish|
Preparation: How to make a Zombie
- Add all ingredients except 151 and garnish to a cocktail shaker with ice and shake until chilled. Alternatively, you can blend everything in a blender with a cup of ice to make this a frozen drink.
- Strain into a Highball glass or Hurricane glass over fresh ice.
- Float the 151 rum on top by pouring over a spoon.
- Garnish with a sprig of clapped mint and serve.
