Malibu Rum is an extremely popular, coconut-flavored rum that was first launched in 1980, and over the following decades became one of the most popular flavored rum brands in the world. While not generally regarded as a great, subtle spirit, Malibu Rum has long enjoyed its role as the go-to ingredient for tropical cocktails, especially modern versions of the Piña Colada—when it comes to sales, pop-culture seems to trump quality.
Coming in at just 21% ABV, Malibu Rum blurs the line between liqueur and spirit, arguably making it more approachable for casual drinkers. It’s mixable, but we would caution against sipping it neat—like a lot of industrially-processed flavored rums, the coconut flavor is a bit metallic and artificial-tasting upon close inspection, and it’s really, really sweet. Captain Morgan’s Parrot Bay and Cruzan Coconut are much better choices, but if you feel like whipping up a Caribou Lou while singing along with Tech N9ne, Malibu Rum is the authentic stuff.
