Basil Hayden's Bourbon is one of several small-batch bourbon brands produced by Jim Beam. It's named for Basil Hayden, Sr., a renowned Kentucky distiller (the same Basil Hayden for whom Old Grand-Dad Bourbon is named). Basil Hayden's is a rye-heavy bourbon, giving it a bit of the characteristic spice of a rye whiskey.
Unlike some of Jim Beam's other small-batch brands, like Knob Creek and Booker's Bourbon, Basil Hayden's is bottled at a standard 80 proof instead of 100 or 120+. Because it's a little less potent than its cousins, it has a more mellow finish and lacks much of that cask-strength bite. Basil Hayden's Bourbon used to carry an 8-year age statement, but that has since been removed from the label.
