- ABV is an abbreviation of alcohol by volume, and is a measurement of how much alcohol is contained within a given volume of an alcoholic beverage. ABV is expressed as a percentage, and is equal to half the proof of the beverage (which is a related measurement of alcohol content). In most countries, it is a requirement that all alcoholic beverages display their ABV on the packaging.
Examples:
A spirit that is 80 proof is 40% ABV.
What’s the ABV of that beer?
