- Proof is a measurement used to determine the alcohol content of a distilled spirit. In the United States, proof is always twice the ABV (alcohol by volume) of the beverage. In most countries, it is a requirement that all alcoholic beverages display their proof or ABV on the packaging.
A spirit that is 40% ABV is 80 proof.
This is a 100 proof whiskey.
