  1. A cocktail made with whiskey (typically rye whiskey), sweet vermouth, and bitters (typically Angostura bitters), often garnished with a maraschino cherry. It is named for the New York City borough of Manhattan, and while its origin is debated it was likely invented sometime in the 1860s.
