genever

  1. A juniper berry-flavored spirit that is a predecessor of today’s gin. Genever is most popular in the Netherlands and Belgium where it was invented. In recent years, however, it has gained traction outside of Europe as well, thanks largely to the thriving craft cocktail industry. Genever is typically broken into two categories: jonge (young, or unaged genever) and oude (old, or aged genever).

Pronounced: juh-nee-vur

May also be known as: jenever, Holland gin, Dutch gin

Origin:

From the Dutch “jeneverbes,” meaning juniper berry.
