You might know Ancho Reyes. It’s the sweet and spicy poblano chile liqueur that’s a natural companion to agave spirits. Ancho Reyes Verde is similar, in that it’s made from those same poblano chiles. But where the former uses sun-dried peppers (known as ancho chiles), the verde version uses early-harvest peppers for a taste that’s bright, fresh and green.
Ancho Reyes Verde Chile Poblano Liqueur is packaged in a vibrant green bottle, with the liqueur itself pouring a milder green-yellow-brown in the glass. Immediately upon pouring, the aromas inside that 80 proof liquid jump out of the glass–spicy charred poblano peppers with a hint of sweetness. Take a sip, and that peppery quality translates to the palate, with lots of savory character complementing the sweet, vegetal kick. It’s warm, but pleasantly so–more earthiness than fire. It finishes with mild citrus and honey notes, but that poblano flavor doesn’t fade for several minutes.
Ancho Reyes Verde is easy enough to drink, if you’d like to down a shot and follow it with a beer. But its primary use is as a mixer. Consider adding a small pour to bloody marys; spruce up a margarita; or get creative.
