This Cocktail Enthusiast original starts with the unique flavor of Bols Genever, which is a Holland-made spirit that blends a wheat, corn and rye distillate with a juniper berry distillate. Genever’s a predecessor to today’s gin, but it also sports properties similar to unaged whiskey, and the flavor is rich and malty.
The below cocktail, dubbed the Blue Genever, is a well-balanced drink that adds citrus, sugar and herbs to a Genever and blueberry backbone.
Blue Genever
1 1/2 ounces Bols Genever
1/2 ounce lemon juice
1/2 ounce simple syrup
5-6 leaves of pineapple sage
10 blueberries
1 dash orange bitters
Muddle blueberries in mixing glass. Press sage leaves to release essential oils, and add to the glass with the remaining ingredients. Shake with ice, and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with blueberries and sage.
Yum! I just tried genever for the first time last night and loved it! Found your article while looking for recipes… I’ll have to find me some pineapple sage and give this one a try!
Looks delicious!
