What is a Irish Coffee Mug?

The Irish Coffee mug is, unsurprisingly, primarily used for serving Irish Coffees. Unlike a standard coffee or tea mug, it’s made from clear glass and features a squat stem and base that elevate the drink off the bar or table. Some versions feature a handle, while others (like those used at the legendary Buena Vista Cafe in San Francisco) are more like stout wine glasses.

The clear glass shows off the beautiful layering of cream and coffee, making it a glass that may do more in the way of aesthetics than function. But it’s a classic for a reason, and if you want to make an authentic Irish Coffee, you’re going to need a proper mug.
