Going through our notes of good cocktails we sampled at Tales of the Cocktail led us to a couple we consumed at the Angostura Bitters U.S. Cocktail Challenge. After prior competitions whittled the contestants down to five bartenders, the finalists competed for a $5,000 prize and a trip to Trinidad for the 2014 Angostura Bitters Global Cocktail Challenge.
Yani Frye, from Detroit’s Sugar House, took home the prize. His cocktails utilized Angostura in a variety of ways, from dashes of bitters to Angostura foam. Neither cocktail is incredibly complex, but both are refreshing, easy-drinking options that would pair nicely with a porch swing. His drinks are below.
The Morning After
2 oz Rum
.5 oz fresh lime juice
.5 oz maple syrup
Angostura Bitters foam
Shake all incgredients and strain into a rock glass without ice. Top with Angostura Aromatic Bitters foam and add a light dusting of cayenne pepper.
The Room Key
1.5 oz Angostura 5 Year Rum
.5 oz elderflower liqueur
.5 oz fresh lemon juice
.5 oz raw ginger syrup
Soda
Shake all ingredients with ice, and strain into a collins glass over an ice spear. Top with soda. Heavily top drink with Angostura aromatic bitters.
