Sugar Daddy Rum is the latest product release from Prohibition Spirits, the Sonoma based company that also makes the line of Hooker’s House whiskeys. Sugar Daddy Rums are available in three expressions — Light Rum, Amber Rum and Dark Rum — and all three rums are originally sourced in the Caribbean before being aged in wine and bourbon barrels at Prohibiton Spirits’ California distillery.
Sugar Daddy Light Rum is a light pot still rum that hails from Jamaica. It’s matured in large puncheon barrels that previously stored Chardonnay. According to the company, this rum “has rich flavors of banana, coconut and pineapple which are typical of this style of rum. The Rum is aged for over a year in puncheons which gives it a soft but powerful elegance for light rum. The barrels add an additional tropical bouquet of flavors that suggest citrus, pear and floral that takes on a lightly straw blonde color.”
Sugar Daddy Amber Rum is a more robust Jamaican pot still rum that was also matured in Chardonnay barrels. The rum is medium bodied and “rich in exotic island flavors of mango, banana, papaya and pineapple. The heavier charred French Oak Chardonnay barrels provide subtle influences of caramel, vanilla and buttery oak.”
Sugar Daddy Dark Rum is an intense aged rum that is sourced from Guyana. Unlike the Chardonnay-aged rums above, the Sugar Daddy Dark Rum is matured in used Hooker’s House Bourbon barrels for two years. The whiskey barrels interact with the dark rum to create “intense flavors of caramel, vanilla and toffee with hints of sweet cane, wood and oak.”
All three expressions come in under $30. Availability is pretty limited at the moment, but west coasters can find bottles at Blackwell’s Wines & Spirits, K&L Wine Merchants and D&M.
