Piedra Azul is a 100% agave tequila that’s produced at the La Madrileña Distillery in Jalisco, which dates back to 1911. The company offers a resposado tequila, which is aged for four months in oak barrels, as well as the unaged blanco, which is the focus of our review.
Piedra Azul Blanco Tequila is very sweet on the nose, with a mix of vanilla and something reminiscent of strawberry cream blending into a background of fresh agave. Take a sip, and there’s more sweetness — mostly vanilla — plus some citrus and mild hints of pepper. The pepper rounds things out, creating a mild bite, which is a welcome addition to the creamy candy-like quality present in this tequila. It finishes clean and cool.
Overall, there’s not a ton going on here. The initial sweetness is almost overbearing, but the agave and pepper come forward to round things out, creating a very quaffable tequila. Given the modest price tag, it’s certainly a bargain tequila that plays nicely in margaritas. Or, just line up a row of shots and knock them back.
Nothing here is particularly memorable, but at under $20, that’s not really an issue. For the price, it’s worth the effort. And with solid 100% agave tequilas available for under $20, there’s really no reason to ever drink Cuervo Gold again.
