Tres Papalote Mezcal is a new entrant to the category, and one that’s sporting a famous face behind the label: Cheech Marin. The actor and comedian best known as one half of the Cheech and Chong duo serves as brand ambassador for the new mezcal. The spirit itself is distilled from the Wild Cupreata agave plant, which is grown on the mountaintops of Guerrero, Mexico.
Interestingly, Tres Papalote is available in three expressions, each distinguished by its alcohol content. Initial bottles are available at 40% and 46%, and a 100 proof spirit is coming next year. We’re sitting here with the entry level mezcal, so that’s where we’ll begin.
On the nose, Tres Papalote Mezcal is sweet and savory with mild smoke. Take a sip for more of the same, as notes of sweet fruit and vanilla frosting mingle with refreshing citrus, light smoke and plenty of earth. It’s smooth and full on the palate with a silky quality that keeps things easygoing. The finish is long and friendly, finally turning drier at the end.
It’s not the most complex mezcal we’ve tasted, and it’s absent the heavy smoke that many mezcal aficionados look for. But it does achieve some good balance between sweet and smoke, and it’s damn easy to drink, which should appeal to novice mezcal drinkers. For a new player in the market–one that’s backed by a celebrity and sporting a vibrant, recognizable bottle–that’s not a bad way to go.
Tres Papalote Mezcal is available in select markets across the country, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami and Chicago.
