At last week’s Tales of the Cocktail, Don Julio introduced 70 Anejo Claro, a new tequila that embodies the rich, complex flavors of an anejo tequila in a filtered, crystal clear spirit. The new product is being launched in honor of the 70th anniversary of the year founder Don Julio González began making Don Julio tequila.
Don Julio 70 Anejo Claro starts as Don Julio Añejo and filters the tequila through a specialty process that brings back the bold agave flavor typically found in a Blanco. The result is a crystal clear tequila that combines traditional Añejo and Blanco flavors.
It sounds similar to Maestro Dobel Diamond Tequila, which blends reposado, anejo and extra anejo tequilas, and then filters out all the color for a tequila that exhibits oak maturity in flavor, but not in appearance. But as noted above, 70 Anejo Claro is no blend, as it’s created strictly from Don Julio Anejo.
Pending review, here are tasting notes provided by Don Julio –
Nose: A bright and lively aroma opens up tones of fresh agave, wild honey, vanilla, citrus and strawberry, balanced with aged tequila notes of sweet toasted oak, caramel and milk chocolate.
Taste: Displays the exceedingly refined complexity of aged Añejo tequila balanced with the versatility and smoothness of a silver. Contains notes of fresh honey, black peppercorn, lemon and smoky agave that blend harmoniously with wood influenced vanilla, toasted almonds and tobacco. Lightly sweet and satiny body.
Finish: Concludes with a clean and smooth finish that is pleasantly warming with engaging lingering hints of chocolate and toffee.
Don Julio 70 Anejo Claro will be available this fall for a suggested retail price of $70.
