Organic. Non-GMO. I’ve long grown accustomed to seeing those words in the bread aisle.

But at the liquor store? Not so much.

Both words feature prominently on the bottling of LEAF Organic Vodka, a relatively new offering from the makers of Khortytsa Vodka. The brand currently sells two different varieties, each named after its specific source.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I should tell you that I have no idea what the benefits of drinking non-GMO vodka are. But I can tell you whether or not they taste good, More on that below:

LEAF Vodka Made From Alaskan Glacial Water

LEAF’s Alaskan glacial water variety has a pleasant, zesty nose with lime and lemongrass. It is smooth and slightly sweet on the palate, with a soft touch of wheat. A sweetness marked by notes of melon and cantaloupe arise in the center, followed by caramel. All that sweetness fades away into a round, dry finish.

Whatever Alaska is putting in its glacial water, it makes for a satisfyingly complex vodka that will serve you well as a straight sipper.

LEAF Vodka Made From Rocky Mountain Mineral Water

The Rocky Mountain mineral water variety has peaches, cherries and apricot on the nose. It is mellow, light and delicate on the tongue. The expected stone fruit flavors don’t carry over from the nose—instead, they’re replaced by the sweetness of melon and cantaloupe, recalling the notes of its sister expression. But where the other vodka ended in brisk dryness, the LEAF Rocky Mountain Mineral Water Vodka is lush and wet all the way through, and concludes with a long, creamy finish.

Though it shares some of the flavors of its Alaskan brethren, its juicy, then creamy, mouthfeel sets it squarely apart. But the end result is the same: this also makes for a fantastic sipping vodka.

I’m happy to report that LEAF Organic Vodka has the tasting side of their vodka down, and they’ve done it while keeping the price incredibly low. As for the non-GMO part: I’m going to just assume that it’s better for me and be happy about that, too. Cheers.
