Rhum Clément hails from Martinique, where the brand produces a fine collection of agricole style rums. Unlike most rums which are distilled from molasses, a sugarcane byproduct, rhum agricole is distilled from fresh-pressed, fermented sugarcane juice. This results in an earthier, funkier spirit full of terroir, and one that’s been designated with a government-stamped AOC (protected designation of origin).
We’ve written about Rhum Clément in the past, and they continue to release new products to keep us busy. In this case, the recently launched Canne Bleue and Select Barrel.
Clément Canne Bleue is crafted from a single varietal of sugarcane — the intensely aromatic blue sugarcane. Once distilled, it rests for more than six months in a stainless steel vat before being cut with volcanic spring water down to a still-hefty 50% ABV.
On the nose, Canne Bleue is full of grassy sugarcane, dry fruit and chalky minerals. Drink up for bright and lively flavors ranging from meringue and citrus to white pepper. The mouthfeel is dry and clean, and everything finishes smoothly with a lingering hint of sweet vegetation and earthy minerals.
Rhum Clément has produced a winner here. Rather than a complex spirit bursting with competing flavors, Canne Bleue is a fine example of a simple, single varietal rhum agricole. It’s clean, balanced and distinctive, and its overproof nature will work nicely in cocktails.
