Hey, I’ve got nothing against leering luchadores and dancing skeletons. But it’s refreshing to see the modern approach that Tequila Ciudad has taken in its presentation. The brand, which currently sells its Blanco, Reposado and Anejo varieties in more than 27 U.S. states, comes in a decanter-esque bottle that deserves to be refilled and reused long after its original contents have run dry. Both its label—and an etching on the back of the glass—depict the street grids of Mexico City.
I had the opportunity to sample Ciudad’s Blanco expression. The nose holds notes of lime zest, heavy agave, smoke and salt. It begins soft, round and mild on the tongue, and grows warmer as the notes of lime and agave emerge. Just as it starts to heat up a bittersweet cacao note emerges, accompanied by a creamier texture at the center of the palate. The cacao pleasantly sticks to the tongue until it is washed away by a mineral salt flavor, heralding the finish. As the spirit concludes the salt is replaced by pepper, which becomes the star of its long, dry finish.
Overall, Ciudad Blanco’s bittersweet flavor, tempered smoke and dryness make it a fantastic sipping tequila. That may make you feel bad about finishing it, but look on the bright side: you’ll have a cool new decanter for your mantle.
