Hey, we’ve got news. It concerns single malt whiskey. So, yes, it’s good news.
Three Scotland single malts were just introduced — two launched a few days ago and one’s coming in January. Each is a very limited release (and bottled at cask strength), so should you like what you see below, strike quickly. These guys won’t last long.
Glen Garioch 1986 Vintage
A new introduction from this small Highland distillery, Glen Garioch 1986 (pictured) is very limited, with 3,000 bottles available for the entire world, and just 250 bottles for U.S. It’s the fifth expression in Glen Garioch’s Vintage range to date, the others being 1978, 1990, 1991 and 1994. This one would make one hell of a stocking stuffer. 54.6% ABV / $249.99 / available now
Auchentoshan Valinch 2012 Limited Edition
A ‘valinch’ is a tube that’s extended into the cask to get samples for tasting to determine if the spirit is ready for bottling. An apt name for this malt since the spirit is cask-strength. This is the 2nd bottling of this limited edition, and 1,300 bottles have been reserved for the U.S. market. Auchentoshan is Scotland’s only triple-distilled malt, so it’s pretty smooth stuff. But expect the high-proof Valinch to deliver a distinct kick. 57.2% ABV / $59.99 / available now
Bowmore Dorus Mor Small Batch Release
This cask-strength, 10 Year Old whiskey is known as Bowmore Tempest to the rest of the world, but the 2,400 bottles coming stateside are called Bowmore Dorus Mor. It’s a heady and strong spirit from Islay that tastes like the island and sea itself, and offers plenty of Bowmore’s trademark peat smokiness. 55.1% ABV / $119.99 / available Jan 2013
God I love Bowmore. I’ve currently got the 12, 15 and Legend.. I’ve got to get my hands on this one.
Any idea if these are available nationwide? With so few bottles, maybe not…
