Glenfiddich Project XX is part of the Glenfiddich Experimental Series, which inspires unusual and unexpected whiskies. Newly launched in the U.S., Project XX (pronounced “twenty”) is the result of a collaboration between Glenfiddich’s Malt Master, Brian Kinsman, and 20 whisky experts from 16 countries around the world. Each selected a cask from a warehouse at the Glenfiddich Distillery, and together they developed this unique single malt, which was blended together by Kinsman to achieve the final product.
Glenfiddich Project XX is a good-looking whisky, pouring a deep gold in the glass. On the nose, it’s tame and pleasant, with notes of vanilla, spice and mild oak accompanied by pears and apples. Take a sip, and that vanilla oak comes to the forefront, followed by toast, nuts and spice. The palate is more robust than the nose suggests, and a roll around the mouth brings out plenty of cinnamon heat. It closes with more oak and a gentle vanilla sweetness, which provides for a relaxing, easygoing finish.
Interestingly, Glenfiddich recommends rimming your glass in a light dusting of sea salt flakes, as the salt works well with the fruity notes in the blend. That’s certainly unusual, and it’s nice to see a classic Scotch whisky brand bucking tradition. And while that won’t be our regular method of operation, it was a fun experiment, which is what this whole series is all about.
