The House of Martell, that three-hundred-year-old veteran of the cognac industry, has a new offering drawn from a single distillation source: the aptly named Martell VS Single Distillery.
This new cognac pours a rich, reddish-brown in the glass and has sour cherry and stone fruit on the nose. It’s a pleasant aroma, but you don’t know what you’re in for until you’ve felt the spirit on your tongue.
Martell VS Single Distillery Cognac is not so much light-on-the-palate as it is gravity-defying, seemingly floating above the taste buds themselves. It begins cool and turns hot: as it does so, the initial fruity flavors sweeten to cherry at the center of the palate, then deepen into fig and plum as it continues its march onward. It picks up spice at the very end, climaxing with lots of oak.
Martell VS Single Distillery reaches an incredible level of softness without sacrificing body. It’s a wonderful feat of cognac engineering, and particularly well suited to the warmer months ahead.
And if you’re into fine-drinking cognacs, you’ll want to try Martell Blue Swift, another expression from the house that’s full of oak and cherry.
