In a category that’s teeming with celebrity tequilas, the surprise here isn’t that Matthew McConaughey just launched a tequila — it’s that it took him this long to do so. Also, the surprise is that the tequila is called Pantalones, which is Spanish for pants.
Pantalones Organic Tequila was cofounded by Matthew and Camila McConaughey. They call it an “agave-forward tequila that is smooth, flavorful, and great for sipping, shooting or mixing up in your favorite Fancy Pants cocktail.”
A quick search shows that the tequila is made at NOM 1614, the same distillery that also makes the Tres Agaves brand.
The Pantalones Tequila portfolio includes Blanco, Reposado and Añejo expressions. Each is distilled from 100% organic blue weber agave. The Blanco is said to contain cooked agave sweetness alongside notes of honey and citrus. The Reposado is aged for nine months in oak barrels that formerly held American whiskey, and it shows vanilla, sweet fruit, and fresh oak. The Añejo was aged for 15 months in American oak, and it has notes of vanilla, sweet butterscotch, brown sugar, and maple.
This isn’t Matthew McConaughey’s first brush with spirits. He formerly served as creative director for Wild Turkey Longbranch, an eight-year-old bourbon that’s filtered through charcoal made from Texas mesquite wood.
“The world doesn’t need another celebrity tequila, but tequila sure could use a kick in the pants,” said Matthew and Camila McConaughey in a statement. “Pantalones Organic Tequila is the best thing we’ve made with our pants on.”
The website notes that, while pantalones is most definitely Spanish for pants, it’s also Spanish slang for guts. It continues: “Pantalones Tequila is all about having the guts to make that next move, to have fun and not take things too seriously. We all put our pants on one leg at a time, and just like pants our tequila is for everyone.”
