Back in November, we reported that Anchor Distilling Company inked a deal to bring Nikka Japanese Whisky to the U.S. market. The two expressions include Yoichi Single Malt 15-year-old and Taketsuru Pure Malt 12-year-old. Well, we’ve got a bottle of the latter, so let’s take it for a spin.
Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt 12 Year Old is a blend of malt whisky (meaning there’s no grain whisky in there) from the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries. On the nose, it’s full of barley, oak and dried fruit. Take a sip, and you’ll find plenty of malt, fresh apples, pears, honey and mild vanilla. It’s very easy on the palate, with a medium bodied mouth feel. It finishes clean, dry and fairly short.
Overall this whisky shows good balance between its grain, fruit and oak characteristics. It’s an easy drinking dram that’s certainly worth a try if you like Japanese whiskies. And even if you don’t, this one’s not far off from a Speyside, if you happen to enjoy those.
