When it comes to whiskey, America’s least inhabited state punches far above its population density. The latest evidence of this is Wyoming Whiskey Double Cask, a limited edition bourbon that launched earlier this year.
To create the release, Wyoming Whiskey finished their five-year-old bourbon in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. The spirit pours a rich, reddish gold in the glass and has a nose replete with sherry and baking spices, particularly nutmeg.
The 100 proof spirit is instantly hot on the tongue, and starts with sweet notes of orange peel and vanilla. Slightly juicy at first sip, it quickly turns dry. Strong flavors of oak emerge in the middle, joined by salt and the rich, dark flavor of dried figs. Its savoriness continues as the flavor of dried, smoked meat becomes present. Then a burst of baking spice springs up, which plays itself out in a lingering, bone-dry finish.
Wyoming Whiskey Double Cask is an unabashed thrill ride through a sherry cask, and if you can still find it on store shelves, pick up a bottle.
