Yellow Rose Distilling hails from Houston, where they’ve been making whiskey since 2010. The company is currently putting out three spirits–Outlaw Bourbon, a Blended Whiskey and this, the Yellow Rose Straight Rye Whiskey.
The juice itself is sourced from a handful of undisclosed distilleries around the country. Then once procured, it’s blended and bottled at their Houston facility. And like many ryes these days, it sports that popular 95% rye mashbill.
Yellow Rose Rye pours a copper-amber color in the glass and has aromas of vanilla, brown sugar and oak. Take a sip, and things maintain a solid balance between sweet (vanilla, maple) and spice, and the whole thing’s accented with a measured dose of cooling mint and floral honey notes. It finishes smooth and easy, with mild pepper and dry oak lingering until the end.
This is good rye and a solid choice for sipping neat, if that’s your thing. But if you’d rather mix it–and rye whiskeys are certainly a good candidate for that–we can confirm that it makes a fine Old Fashioned.
Yellow Rose whiskeys are available in about a dozen states, including Texas, Colorado, Washington, Florida and Massachusetts.
