Tequila Ocho has a vintage, which is rare. It also comes from a single estate. Also rare. My bottle of Tequila Ocho Plata was bottled in 2009, with agave harvested from the Las Pomez estate, a highlands area known for its slow maturation of agave, which results in a sweeter plant. Like many wines, Tequila Ocho fervently champions the influences of terroir.
On the nose, the Tequila Ocho Plata has intense aromas of agave and white pepper. Some underlying sweetness and fresh mint linger in the background. It tastes of fruit and spice, plus more agave and a nice hint of butterscotch. It’s full on the palate and finishes with a dry, muted sweetness.
Overall, it’s good stuff. It’s not cheap, but it’d be worth shelling out a few bucks to taste the other vintages of the Plata, plus Ocho’s reposado and anejo tequilas, which vary due to differences in climate and terrain.
