captain morgan white rum

Captain Morgan White Rum is the brand new addition to the Captain Morgan portfolio and will be hitting store shelves this month. It seems to be an aggressive response from the spiced rum leader, as the Captain has lost some market share recently to brands like Bacardi Oakheart. Now it seems they’re striking back with this, their first ever white rum, in hopes of gaining a foothold in a category that’s dominated by Bacardi. Expect this release, which will be backed by tons of marketing dollars, to make a noticeable splash in the marketplace.

Captain Morgan White Rum is distilled five times. This doesn’t mean it’s better than rum that’s distilled four times or even just once. In fact, it should make you wonder why they needed to distill it so many times. But no matter, let’s crack open this new bottle to see how it tastes.

Captain Morgan White Rum is aged in oak barrels for over a year, but it’s filtered to strip away the color, so it pours clear in your glass. Give it a swirl, and you’ll get lots of thick, cascading legs running down the inside of your glass. On the nose, it’s mildly sweet, with some vanilla and fruit. But drink up, and that’s where things really take a turn. It’s intensely flavorful, with lots of tropical fruits – most notably pineapple and melon – plus some bananas, green apples, burnt sugar and coconut. It’s sweet, but not too sweet, and the finish moves toward more fruit and some dry, peppery spice.

The fruit-forward nature of this rum surprised us. Perhaps we’re biased from Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, but we fully expected an onslaught of sugar. Instead, it was an onslaught of fruit. It’s not a particularly balanced rum, but those creamy pineapple and banana notes along with the tart green apple should stand up well in cocktails. The brand recommends pairing the rum with lime soda, but if you’ve got it in you, it should work fine in more elaborate rum drinks.

It’s an interesting release, to be sure. Look for Captain Morgan White Rum to roll out nationwide this month.
