With interest in rye whiskey at an all-time high, today we welcome a new one to the mix: Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel Rye. This spicy, 104-proof whiskey comes from Master Distillers Jimmy and Eddie Russell, who wanted to create a versatile and robust rye that works as well in cocktails as it does on its own. To keep the flavor and character intact, Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel Rye is not chill-filtered. It’s rich caramel in color with aromas and flavors of spicy pepper, vanilla and caramel.
Before Prohibition, rye was a popular choice among consumers. But this American whiskey fell on hard times, and only recently has rye regained its prominence. In a report released this month, The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) declared that rye whiskey volumes have grown from 88,000 nine-liter cases in 2009 to 561,000 cases in 2014. That’s a whopping 536% growth rate.
This isn’t the first Russell’s Reserve Rye, as the brand already sports a very solid six year old expression. But with this new single barrel variety, they’re striking while the iron’s hot.
Beginning this month, Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel Rye will be available year-round as a permanent addition to the brand’s portfolio. 750ml bottles will go for a suggested retail price of $59.99.
