Stranahan’s Sherry Cask Whiskey, the latest expression from the Colorado-based distiller, was created by finishing their four-year-old Rocky Mountain Single Malt in Oloroso Sherry barrels. It has a dark amber color and a sweet nose containing raisins, green apple, vanilla and nutmeg.
It opens sweet on the palate with raisin and green apple, and has a thick, nutty body that coats the tongue like honey. The sweetness peaks at the center before notes of fig and walnut are revealed, which are followed by more savory, sherry flavors with a delicate trace of spice—an impressive feat, considering it’s 94 proof. Light vanilla and oaky tannins ensure a long, dry finish with just a touch of spice.
Stranahan’s Sherry Cask is an excellent, big-bodied whiskey that should please sherry enthusiasts and the sherry-curious alike. It may inspire a craving for Ibérico Ham—but then again, this whiskey is so substantial that it feels like a meal in a glass.
