Brazil’s most popular cocktail is the Caipirinha, a delightful combination of cachaça, sugar and muddled lime. It’s easy enough to make, provided you’re at home or behind a bar. But when you’re heading to the beach, a picnic or attending some other socially-acceptable occasion for drinking (Little League game?), it’s not particularly practical.
But this new Novo Fogo Sparkling Caipirinha sure as hell is. Because, you see, it’s a sparkling Caipirinha… in a can. Said can contains 200ml of cocktail composed of Novo Fogo Silver Cachaça, sugar, natural lime flavor and carbonation, and all that clocks in at a respectable 11.1% ABV.
“Cachaça is still growing its awareness in the USA, so we want easy ways to get people into the category,” said Dragos Axinte, Novo Fogo’s Founder and CEO.
Fair enough.
You can never quite nail that fresh lime taste without using fresh limes, but Novo Fogo has put forth a valiant effort–their Sparkling Caipirinha tastes reasonably like the real thing. It’s sweeter than we’d make at home, but not cloying. The cachaça shines through nicely, and the carbonated kick is refreshing. Those qualities combine to create something we’d consider throwing into a bag when heading to the beach, and we can certainly see its appeal as a fun, portable drink.
But for that real Caipirinha flavor, you just can’t beat the real thing, so aficionados of all things fresh will still want to break out some limes and a muddler. Here’s a Caipirinha recipe for doing just that.
